Consider factors such as the time of day before you go fishing, as this can impact the success of a fishing trip. During the warmer months, the ideal times to catch most types of fish are mornings and late afternoons. At the beginning of spring, freshwater fish start coming out of the deep, underwater holes where they spent the winter. While afternoon to dusk can offer ample fishing, fish activity varies in the morning as the season progresses.
Mornings in early springtime may prove less promising due to the remnants of winter temperatures, which means low insect populations and slower warming of deeper water. However, early-season weed growth and plankton numbers in shallow water bays can attract enough baitfish to draw out larger fish in the mid-morning on warmer days. This is especially so for the northern end of lakes, where the water warms first.
Late spring brings more consistently warm weather, and fish tend to move to hard-bottom shallow areas to build nests and spawn. Around this time, shift your morning fishing trips to early mornings. Sunrise and late afternoons also become the best periods to catch fish like pike, bass, and panfish.
